Dating – the New Networking Tool?

by Geoff Kirkwood on June 29th, 2009

Cast your mind back to your first date.

Yes I know for some readers that may be a few years…… but indulge me.

What was your approach?

I am guessing the following:-

1. You were excited and enthusiastic
2. You were out to make a good impression
3. You didn’t plan to ask her or him to marry you on the first date
4. You were probably early or at least on time
5. You looked to give rather than take – maybe even had a gift
6. You acted as though there may well be a follow-up date

Are these some of the qualities that eventually led you to find a partner?

Networking is exactly the same! Here are some tips!

a. Be enthusiastic – no-one wants to connect with someone who exhibits apathy
b. Make your first impression a good one – you may not get a second chance
c. Don’t start asking for a sale at the very first meeting
d. Be on time – or better still be early
e. Ask how you can help the other person, not look for what you can get
f. Plan a follow-up meeting before you leave

If you find your networking isn’t working as well as you want then maybe you have lost that “first date” approach.
